Jacob Lurie to lead Mathematical AI Safety Institute (MAISI) full-time; will not join OpenAI as employee
Jacob Lurie announced he will work full-time at the Mathematical AI Safety Institute as its founding Scientific Director and will not join OpenAI as an employee, though he says he will still collaborate there. Nathan Calvin praised the move and urged math faculty interested in AI safety to apply, noting Lurie is a Fields medalist focused on bringing mathematicians into safety work.

- Jacob is brilliant and i'm very happy he is bringing his considerable talents and energy to urgently contribute on AI safety and helping other mathematicians transition into this work as well. If someone reading this is or knows any math faculty who are interested in working on AI safety with a fields medalist who deeply feels the urgency of getting this issue right, tell them to apply at https://t.co/Tm8YsX0Aja. This work is an ideal way for them to productively channel their AI <> Math related malaise!I’m excited to announce that I will be working at the Mathematical AI Safety Institute (MAISI) full-time as its founding Scientific Director! This means I will not be joining OpenAI as an employee, though I will still be collaborating with them, and I’m happy to announce that OpenAI will be supporting MAISI. They have offered us $10MM in API credits, and access to their latest models for our research use. Moreover, they will be participating in a multi-lab AI safety workshop we are organizing for next year with other frontier AI labs. As an independent research institute, we are also in conversations with other labs and AI safety orgs about how MAISI can collaborate with them and contribute quickly to AI safety research across the industry. As we’ve seen over the past few weeks, the need for action on AI safety is extremely urgent. Research is an important part of that, and mathematicians have an important role to play! open on X3 likes · 1 reposts
