OpenAI's Silence on AI Chip Controls Sparks Debate Over US National Security

7 people · 17 posts · first post · latest

Nathan Calvin noted that OpenAI's retreat from advocating for strict AI chip export controls to China is disheartening and suggests an appeasement of Nvidia. Samuel Hammond criticized the move as harming US national security and urged OpenAI to increase its stance. Critics like Zvi Mowshowitz argue this sacrifices US interests and safety efforts; recent posts have highlighted the presence of pro-Nvidia bot accounts in replies to critical commentary.

Its mind-boggling to me that so many people are hesitant to support AI safety rules on the grounds that it might help China, but some of those same folks want to sell far more advanced AI chips to China. Sad to see OpenAI retreat on this issue (to keep NVIDIA happy?)

OpenAI has pulled back from supporting AI chip controls, seemingly to appease Nvidia. Bad for US AI dominance and national security simultaneously. Grow a spine! politico.com/news/2026/10/2…

Concerning. Arguably what OAI does on this policy front is more important than any of their near-term product launch decisions in terms of US competitiveness, so I hope staff are asking about what the deal is here...

By not supporting export controls, OpenAI is sacrificing America's interests, safety efforts, efforts to pace the frontier and also the direct interests of OpenAI. The winners are China and Nvidia. If I was at OpenAI I would be asking very hard questions about this.

OpenAI and the United States both directly lose from AI chips going to China. This is a key way how China competes with American AI.

Getting more and more replies from random pro-Nvidia bot accounts. Who's running these?
So we’re supposed to believe OpenAI changed its position just to appease Nvidia, based on anonymous sources? Amazing how a headline can turn an unverified claim into a whole conspiracy. On something as important as AI chip exports, the facts should speak louder than speculation. open on X
