POLITICO: OpenAI goes quiet on AI chip export controls to China; commentators blame NVIDIA ties
POLITICO reports OpenAI once pushed to keep AI chips from China but now stays quiet on export controls. Nathan Calvin and Samuel Hammond attribute the retreat to appeasing NVIDIA; both call it bad for safety and national security, though that motive is their speculation, not Politico's reporting. Miles Brundage calls the shift concerning and says OpenAI's stance matters more for US competitiveness than its product launches. Peter Wildeford adds that chip exports to China directly help Chinese AI compete with the US.

- Its mind-boggling to me that so many people are hesitant to support AI safety rules on the grounds that it might help China, but some of those same folks want to sell far more advanced AI chips to China. Sad to see OpenAI retreat on this issue (to keep NVIDIA happy?)OpenAI once pushed to keep AI chips from China. Now it's staying quiet. politi.co/3TRuwRQ open on X5 likes · 1 reposts

- Concerning. Arguably what OAI does on this policy front is more important than any of their near-term product launch decisions in terms of US competitiveness, so I hope staff are asking about what the deal is here...@hamandcheese: OpenAI has pulled back from supporting AI chip controls, seemingly to appease Nvidia. - OpenAI and the United States both directly lose from AI chips going to China. This is a key way how China competes with American AI.OpenAI once pushed to keep AI chips from China. Now it's staying quiet. politi.co/3TRuwRQ open on X14 likes · 3 reposts
- By not supporting export controls, OpenAI is sacrificing America's interests, safety efforts, efforts to pace the frontier and also the direct interests of OpenAI. The winners are China and Nvidia. If I was at OpenAI I would be asking very hard questions about this.@hamandcheese: OpenAI has pulled back from supporting AI chip controls, seemingly to appease Nvidia.
